College football's most colorful, endearing, and successful pioneer, Steve Spurrier, shares his story of a life in football - from growing up in Tennessee to winning the Heisman Trophy to playing and coaching in the pros to leading the Florida Gators to six SEC Championships and a National Championship to elevating the South Carolina program to new heights - and coaching like nobody else. He's been called brash, cocky, arrogant, pompous, egotistical, and hilarious, but, mostly, he's known as the Head Ball Coach, a self-ordained term introduced to the lexicon of football by none other than the man himself, Steve Spurrier. He is the only coach who can claim to be the winningest coach at two different SEC schools, and the only person who has won both the Heisman Trophy as a player and a national championship as a coach. Or who has won a Heisman and coached a Heisman winner. From the beginning, Spurrier didn't want to sound like other coaches, dress like other coaches, and, especially, coach like other coaches. As a controversial football pioneer, he ushered in a different style of leadership and play. Spurrier's press conferences were glorious - he refused to lapse into coachspeak and was always entertaining, although he took his football very seriously. He was known for his fierce competitiveness, roaming up and down the sidelines, often throwing his signature visor to the ground in disgust. Now resigned from coaching at age 70 - he doesn't like to say "retired" yet - Spurrier has calmed down, but don't mistake that for a lack of fire. He can be just as feisty as the day he set foot on the East Tennessee dirt in Johnson City's Kiwanis Park, where he grew up to become one of the state's all-time greatest athletes, and went on to play for Florida where he launched one of sports history's all-time great careers. In his memoir, Spurrier talks for the first time about the circumstances under which he unexpectedly became a coach and why he 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Stechschulte. Lyall was widely regarded as man of great integrity and is credited with laying down the foundations of the footballing beliefs and values of today's West Ham United. This new in-depth biography documents Lyall's football career from West Ham groundstaff boy in 1955, through his playing debut, injury, and eventual steps into coaching and management under the watchful eye of Ron Greenwood. A much-loved and respected figure at Upton Park, Lyall had a lasting influence on the club's development and the team's style of play and during his time in charge, West Ham twice won the FA Cup. Later, when Lyall took over at Ipswich Town, he led the club to promotion to the inaugural Premier League in 1991/92. There's no scoreboard in the sanctuary, and the only plate is probably for the offering. But every church leader needs to know how to win, and every congregation needs to know when to cheer. This insightful book speaks to every church leader who yearns for a simpler, more effective approach to ministry. An engaging parable about one overwhelmed pastor is followed by an overview of seven successful team practices, each one developed and applied in a ministry setting. Reinforced by relevant discussion questions, these clear, easy, and strategic practices can turn any ministry into a winning team. Your ministry is perfectly designed to produce the results you are currently experiencing. If you are satisfied with those results, you don't need this book. If not, it's time for a change. Like your own personal trainer, 7 Practices of Effective Ministry is an insightful guide for any leader who yearns for a simpler, more effective approach to ministry. Here are seven strategic principles that when put into play will bring focus and clarity to everything you do and turn your ministry into a winning team. Story Behind the Book Looking for ways to help pastors faced with hectic lives and depleted resources, Andy Stanley, Reggie Joiner, and Lane Jones decided to write a parable about the complicated life of a local pastor. Rather than come straight at those in ministry with formulas and lists, they engage readers in an effort to have them identify with the character. 'For many years, I practiced and taught church growth. What I have witnessed as a member at North Point takes church growth to a whole new level. Andy and his team communicate principles that will add value to you and the church you love.' -John C. Maxwell, founder, The INJOY Group 'Every professional athlete recognizes the value of solid coaching. The best are always working to get better. From what I've seen at North Point, these seven practices can improve the game of any church in America.' -John Smoltz, Cy Young Award-winning pitcher 'The practices covered in this book are down-to-earth, practical, and come from real difference-makers who know what church leadership is all about. Andy, Reggie, and Lane have definitely hit the ball out of the park with the 7 Practices of Effective Ministry.' -Ed Young, Jr., senior pastor, Fellowship Church
A fictionalized account on one man's journey through a 'theme park of life' after being implored by his dying fiancee to go and discover... Trapped in a prison of his past so he can't see the possibilities, the gifts and the choices available to him, his journey is our journey. Based on Brendon's experience teaching and coaching, he realizes that people never transform the quality of their lives unless their hearts and minds are truly engaged in changing - they need to have a deep, emotional reason to change. This beautiful, engaging story of love, loss and redemption will connect with people immediately. It will also cause readers to think and reflect on their lives more deeply, become more aware of their own life stories, accept their authentic selves, and become accountable for who they are. Brendon reaches out to engage hearts and minds in transforming lives with emotional edge and mental clarity. What is this golden ticket? And what kind of life does it really gain us admission to? The chapters are arranged into life lessons around 4 gates to transformation: Awareness, Acceptance, Accountability, and Action. 'Whatever you do, pay the price of admission for Life's Golden Ticket! This book is entertaining, provocative and loaded with wisdom. Honestly, this is the most original book I've read in years!' (Bill Treasurer, CEO, Giant Leap Consulting and author of Right Risk - Ten Powerful Principles for Taking Giant Leaps with Your Life) 'I read the story in one sitting, I just couldn't put it down. I cried, I laughed, I cheered, I wondered where it was all going - and when I finished, I was so thankful for the journey' (K C George, Corporate Program Manager, VISA USA) 'Life's Golden Ticket is wise without being preachy, inspiring without forgetting insight, entertaining without sacrificing empowerment. Brendon Burchard shows incredible depth, compassion, and wisdom on every page. He has given us a true gift.' (Kelley Graham, Director, Levi Strauss & Co)

At the start of February, 1992, Newcastle United were facing relegation to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history. They were also facing bankruptcy. St James' Park had been neglected, the club's best players had been sold. In a daring move, Newcastle appointed Kevin Keegan as manager. Keegan, the two-time European Footballer of the Year, had played for the club between 1982 and 1984. He had been out of football since. His appointment as manager was as big a shock as when he arrived as a player. Exactlyfour years after Keegan's return to the North east of England, Newcastle were top of the Premiership, nine points clear of Manchester United, having played a game less. It would turn out to be one of the most memorable seasons in the modern history of English football. Keegan's side would play a unique brand of football and become known as the Entertainers. They would take part in a game at Anfield that became widely recognised as the best the Premier League has ever seen. Keegan would also famously square up to Sir Alex Ferguson. Touching Distance tells the story of that remarkable season, through the highs and the lows of a truly dramatic campaign. It also traces the seeds of the revival back to Keegan's first spell as a player, to his return and the dramatic impact he had on a football club, its supporters and an entire region. Touching Distance talks to the people who made it happen, the players, the coaching staff and the board and relives a truly momentous period for the club. It is a story of hopes and dreams and when, for Newcastle United, anything seemed possible.
